New York weather is predominantly humid continental with ample dashes of humid subtropical conditions. However, the above mentioned classification is only true when New York weather is viewed as a whole; in reality weather patterns change dramatically between the area’s three main climatic regions. The southeastern lowlands of New York experience the warmest temperatures in the area, the uplands of the Catskills and Adirondacks are characterized by their cold winters and cool summers, whereas snow belt along the Great Lakes Plain are considered to be one of the snowiest areas of the country.

Winter retains a cold disposition throughout the New York region, characterized by freezing rain and bitter cold winds, especially in January. In the northern highlands temperatures drop to a numbing −13 °F (−25 °C) occasionally dipping even lower, remaining slightly warmer (5 °F or −15 °C) in the southwestern and east-central highlands. For a period between 35 to 45 days each winter, temperatures in the Adirondack remain bellow freezing point while much of Upstate New York, particularly Western and Central New York experiences heavy snowfall.

Thanks to the area’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its sheltered position near a hillier terrain towards its northern and western region’s, New York weather is considerably milder in the metro area, experiencing significantly lower amounts of snowfall than the rest of the state. Finally, the extreme northwestern suburbs of the city experience noticeably shorter winters.

New York weather during the summer season fluctuates between cool and hot for most of the area. Weather retains a mild interface in the Adirondacks, Catskills and higher elevations of the Southern Plateau, veering towards hot conditions with some periods of high humidity in the New York City area and lower portions of the Hudson Valley. For the rest of the state, summer is a very pleasant period, although the predominantly fine weather is occasionally intercepted by occasional, brief intervals of stifling conditions. Summer daytime temperatures usually oscillate between the upper 70s to mid 80s °F (25 to 30 °C), over much of the state.
